Origin of Beganyi

The name Beganyi is a Magyar (Hungarian) name. The final "i" in Beganyi gives it the meaning "from Begany," which makes Begany a place name. (Such surnames usually indicate that the family belonged to the lesser nobility; land owning families.)

There are two villages in what is now Ukraine. This part of Ukraine is called Transcarpathia. This area was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1919 and Czechoslovakia from 1920 till 1938. After WWII the Soviets kept the area and made it part of the Ukraine. The names of these towns are, in Magyar, Kisbegany and Nagybegany. The Ukrainian names are Mala Bihan' and Velika Began'.
